Amazing Results – Demodectic Mange Pup

December 1st, 2011

We just got a fantastic e-mail. A woman charted the progress of her foster pup with demodectic mange and got extraordinary results. We can even see through pictures how this little guy progressed – how awesome! Thanks, Frances :)

Dear Organic Pet Superfood,
I am a longtime dog foster Mom and dog rescue volunteer. I often find myself fostering the old, weak or injured. They are the neediest and I find the healing process amazing to be a part of.
In July we were given the option to foster an 8 week old mix breed pup with terrible demodectic mange. The mange had led to skin infections, ulcerations and spreading hair loss.
Of course we wanted to help this beautiful but sad pup.
Demodex mange is an immunity issue and since I work in the holistic animal nutrition field I knew that I would feed a raw diet to exclude any sugar or yeast in the diet. I tried a few immunity supplements but did not feel they added much to his overall health. I read about your product and the amazing reviews and it fit right into the way I wanted to lead him back to holistic health. I added your amazing immunity product to his raw diet and the change was remarkable. The Veterinarian and the whole Vet Clinic was stunned at his speedy and sound recovery.
I have known many dogs that have been given Ivermectin to kill the mange and during the dangerous chemical process the mites become deformed from the chemical treatments and slowly die off. The raw diet and your Immunity supplement led to drastic reduction in numbers of mites, no chemical deformation just dying and dead mites at every scraping during two months. Obviously a WIN for his now powerful immune system. After 8 weeks at the age of 4 1/2 months the pup was mite free, healthy, happy and growing in a lustrous thick black coat.
I owe you a huge thanks for your amazing product. The pup was recently adopted out to a wonderful forever home. He gets compliments all the time on his stunning, thick black coat!
Attached are 4 pictures:

Pup with no more skin infection, healthy skin, coat beginning to return
Pup at 4 1/2 months with filled in coat, healthy, active and happy!

Reason #2358 Why We Love What We Do!

November 2nd, 2011

We received this note the other day from a woman named Sarah who had a lot of great things to say about SKIN + COAT. We love, love, love getting feedback! Thanks so much, Sarah.

You wonderful people:

I am in tears over how thankful I am to have stumbled upon your product.

My 15 month old Dogue de Bordeaux has suffered from d.mange and staph infections for most of his life. He has been losing his hair in clumps! We thought it was a thyroid issue, but when the full thyroid panel came back OK, I just felt helpless. A lifetime on antibiotics is no life at all.

Your Skin and Coat powder came to my attention and I thought, “what the heck!”  HOLY COW!!! I have doubled his dose for 6 days and I am not kidding when I say it is a miracle. His lesions have mostly healed (and no new ones) and his shedding has cut in half!

THANK YOU< THANK YOU<THANK YOU!!

Keeping Your Pet Safe This Halloween

October 31st, 2011

As found on www.dailycamera.com Tips provided by ASPCA & Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

Attention, animal lovers: it’s almost the spookiest night of the year! The ASPCA and the Humane Society of Boulder Valley recommend taking some common sense precautions this Halloween to keep you and your pet saying “trick or treat!” all the way to Nov. 1.

No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms — especially dark or baking chocolate — can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, but they can produce stomach upset in pets who nibble on them.

Wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations should be kept out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet might suffer cuts or burns, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume may cause undue stress.

If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn’t annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal’s movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also, be sure to try on costumes before the big night. If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au natural or donning a festive bandana.

Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.

All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn’t dart outside.

IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver, increasing the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

Do you know where your pets supplements come from?

October 29th, 2011

When you think of ways to ease joint pain in a pet, most people’s minds immediately go to glucosamine or chondroitin. For a long time they have been the front-runners in the fight against joint problems, and this fact is well known. Unfortunately, what everyone doesn’t know is the major issues suppliers have with keeping up the quality of glucosamine/chondroitin, and finding adequate sources of the products.

Between 70-80% of the global supply of glucosamine are sourced from Chinese shellfish. While the rate of growth for this source has slowed, demand hasn’t let up at all and in fact has grown. As a result, the quality of glucosamine supply has taken a hard hit.

Considering the issues within the market, it’s no wonder consumers have been turning to other alternative methods for joint pain. A lot has been tried to reduce stiffness and joint pain in pets, and study after study proves that Natural Eggshell Membrane (NEM) is the most effective natural choice for joint health in both humans and animals. NEM is made up of naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans (including chondroitin and hyaluronic acid) as well as collagen and other proteins that help lubricate the joints, which have been shown to ease pain and stiffness.

Not only is NEM more effective in general, but results can appear quicker with less of the product taken than they do with traditional joint remedies such as glucosamine supplements. For instance, in a study a 500mg once daily dosage of NEM was shown to reduce joint pain after just 10 days, compared to the standard 1500mg daily dosage of glucosamine that typically takes two to three months before yielding any benefits. Finally, the safety of NEM is also significant in that there are no known side effects as compared to the vast effects associated with glucosamine, such as soft stool, diarrhea, fluctuating insulin levels, and possible shellfish allergic reactions.

Another interesting thing to note: NEM is sourced from essentially what would be trash! Have you ever hard boiled an egg and noticed that thin, sheer coating that’s around the egg you can peel off? That’s the eggshell membrane! This is something that would typically be discarded, but instead can be used to ease discomfort in your pet. A win all around!

It’s no wonder that NEM one of the ingredients in our JOINTS product. At Organic Pet Superfood, we believe strongly in keeping pets healthy while also minimizing our impact on the environment. We feel that NEM is a great way to go about that!

Loud and Proud: King Trumpet Mushroom

October 9th, 2011

King trumpet is a mushroom that goes by many names such as king oyster or Pleurotus eryngii, and is named for its shape. Resembling that brassy musical instrument, this mushroom is one of the largest species of the oyster mushroom family.

King trumpet mushroom offers many health benefits to our pets. Its biggest claim to fame is its naturally occurring high levels of L-ergothioneine, which is an antioxidant. Antioxidants like L-ergothioneine can help fight reoccurring disease in your pet by providing extra cell protection. As a side note, maitake mushrooms also contains high amounts of L-ergothioneine (look for maitake in our DIGESTION, JOINTS, and IMMUNITY products).

Another awesome thing king trumpet mushrooms can do for your pet is help naturally regulate cholesterol. Of every mushroom out there, king trumpet is known as the king (so to speak) of this trait. You can find king trumpet in many of our Organic Pet Superfood products including SKIN + COAT and IMMUNITY.

Digest with Maitake

September 29th, 2011

Maitake mushrooms are also known as Dancing Mushrooms, though I couldn’t tell you why! They’ve been consumed for their health benefits in China and Japan for over 3,000 years and like our friend the turkey tail mushroom, maitakes are well known for strengthening the immune system. Historically, maitakes were used as a tonic to promote wellness and still are today. Maitake mushrooms are also thought to regulate high blood pressure, glucose, insulin, and cholesterol but may also be helpful for aiding weight loss. Considering all of the options for helping a dog or cat keep healthy and in good shape, adding maitake mushrooms to their diet may be a wonderful natural way to further benefit their health.

Extracts from maitake such as the beta glucan polysaccharides also stimulate the immune system in a way that results in anti-tumoral effects. Rumor has it that this mushroom is one of the richest sources of beta glucans that can be found in nature. Essentially, beta glucan works by always keeping your dog or cat’s immune system at the ready. It stimulates their immune system by keeping it in a heightened state of defense.

Considering all the tremendous things maitake mushrooms do for a pet’s digestive system, it’s no wonder that it is the first ingredient in our organic DIGESTION product! For a natural way to help control your pet’s weight, insulin levels, cholesterol and numerous other health related issues, try DIGESTION.

Chihuahua’s and their little knees!

September 21st, 2011

After moving to Denver, I saw few things more often as compared to living in Boulder. The first thing I noticed were that as one can imagine, there are way more cars in Denver! Secondly, Denverites have quite the affinity for Chihuahua’s. I mean, they are everywhere! I’ve grown quite fond of the little guys. That being said with every dog has its genetic health issues and with those health issues come some natural ways to ease discomfort.

An unusual issue I’ve read about recently involving Chihuahua’s is called luxation of the patella, which is a dislocated kneecap. Research shows that this is a very common hereditary problem that affects Chihuahuas and other small dogs. Unfortunately only things like surgery can actually attempt to fix luxation of the patella, but there may be ways to ease the pain. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines or other medication to ease the pain but there are natural ways to help inflammation and discomfort.

Organic Pet Superfood’s JOINTS product has been shown to ease both pain and discomfort that comes along with joint/bone issues. Our unique medicinal mushrooms fight free radical cell damage caused by age, exercise and stress. JOINTS aids circulation, eliminates toxins and fights inflammation. Additionally, JOINTS is made with NEM® (Natural Eggshell Membrane) — clinically proven to reduce joint and soft tissue pain. Check out the product and email us with any questions! Boulder Dog Holds World Record!

September 12th, 2011

As if I didn’t already think Boulder, CO was one of the coolest places on Earth (okay, I may be a bit biased) – Harbor, a black and tan coonhound that lives in Boulder just snagged the 2012 Guinness World Records title for “longest ears on a living dog.”

Cutest fact about the story? His owner Jennifer Wert says that when he was a puppy he would trip over his ears and tumble down the stairs. I’m sure she thought he’d grow into them. Well, not really! His left ear is 12 and 1/4 inches long and his right is a whopping 13 and 1/2.

Hounds use their long ears to sweet up scents in the ground to help them be master hunters. I suppose Harbor is probably the most best hunter around!

The Cardio Enhancing Cordyceps

September 12th, 2011

Here’s a funny thing about the cordyceps mushroom – when it was first discovered the Chinese thought it was a worm. Lo and behold cordyceps mushrooms actually have some pretty wonderful health benefits and is in fact a fungus, not a worm. Cordyceps mushrooms are known to strengthen the immune system (like our friend turkey tail mushroom) by increasing the number of Natural Killer Cells which are our pet’s bodies defense against viruses and other bacteria, ours as well.

Cordyceps mushrooms also can help build muscle and improve physical performance while also improving respiratory function (and simultaneously reducing fatigue effects)! To do all of those wonderful cardio-related things, the cordyceps mushroom acts as an antioxidant and increases our formation of cells. It has anti-inflammatory properties which help with joints and muscles throughout the body, including the bronchial walls which helps improve respiratory functions! So awesome. As if it already didn’t do enough for active bodies, cordyceps mushrooms also benefit the vascular system in a big way. It improves circulation, strengthens heart muscle, and can help regulate blood pressure.

Did I mention that cordyceps mushrooms are the main ingredient in our JOINTS product? Time for our pets to get active!

Turkey Tail Mushroom – Fungal Immunity Superhero!

September 7th, 2011

The turkey tail mushroom is one of those ingredients in our product that you read and go, “I’m sorry… what?” Not many people have heard of this type of mushroom! Turkey tail is a wonderful mushroom with medicinal purposes that have been traced back centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It gets its name from its shape – don’t you think it looks like a turkey’s tail?

Essentially, this mushroom does big things for the immune system. One of its coolest claims to fame is its ability to strengthen what are known as T helper cells. These cells tell other cells in our immune system what to do, how much “effort” they should use to do it, and when to stop the task.

Coincidentially, an unfortunate side effect of chemotherapy and radiation is that it kills T helper cells. Turkey tail mushrooms have been the focus of a large number of clinical trials that have shown their ability to help rebuild the immune system in people with different types of cancer. That being said, turkey tail mushroom is not a cure for cancer but it has been shown to extend life without a doubt!

Turkey tail mushroom also jump starts immune systems by reducing susceptibility to infections and other things that can come along with having a weakened immune system. Pretty cool, right? Oh and did I mention that turkey tail mushroom is the number one ingredient in our IMMUNITY product? Not just a coincidence, folks!
